Two of our talented designers, Michael and Melissa were invited by Ege Carpets to visit their factory in Herning, Denmark. The aim of the visit was to help them learn more about Ege, the carpet making process in general and to gain a better understanding of their products.

Danish design

During the trip, the team had a tour of the city hall in Aarhaus which really showed off the incredible Danish design and architecture by Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller. The building was inaugurated in 1941 but it is such a timeless piece of design that still to this day looks and feels modern.

The exterior of the building is clad in Norwegian marble, with the striking features on display throughout the building including floor tiles, parquet flooring, glass and timber cladded walls.

A head for heights

Michael and Melissa also explored the local area and visited the Lyngvig Lighthouse, Denmark’s tallest building at 142metres. After reaching the top in less than 30 seconds, they were met with such amazing views of the city.

Carpet creation

The Ege factory has two sites in Herning. After a tour of both the north and south sites, it was brilliant to see the scale of the factory as well as the various stages of creating the carpets. This included a pre-dyed yarn and ink injected printing process. Michael and Melissa also experienced the colour lab in which they were shown the making of new colours as well as the matching of colours.

Environmental ethos

Ege is on a mission to become a leading company in sustainability, and they talked our designers through their vision and belief in circular thinking. Currently some of Ege’s initiatives include making carpet backings with recycled plastic bottles, recycling glue from broken car windows and yarn from old fishing nets. Ege also clean and reuse water, recirculate the dye, recover heat from the production and then send it to the district for heating, use renewable energy and invest in renewable offshore turbines. It was inspiring to hear their sustainability story.

Michael and Melissa had a fabulous trip with Ege and learnt so much, whilst also enjoying experiencing a new country and eating great local food.
